Water
About twenty glaciers make up 15% of the area of Bionaz and the area holds the record of the largest "frozen area". The landscape has been shaped over thousands of years by water from the glaciers. Small sided valleys, large glaciated plateaus where water has formed alpine lakes, ruts and eroded gorges by raging torrents, waterfalls, streams and small ponds are some of the shapes created by the water.
Man has also made his contribution to the form of water in Bionaz and has added variety to the forms. The artificial Lake of Place Moulin was built as a feeder for hydroelectric power in the 50's and 60's. It has a 155-metre high wall and a 678-metre long crown. It is one of the biggest arched dams in Europe: a huge turquoise fjord that emerges in the heart of the Alpine chain. A 6-kilometre long path along the shore on the right of the dam enables mountain-bike-lovers to undertake healthy physical activity in unique landscapes. Fishing-lowers will also get satisfaction in the waters of the dam and along the Buthier, which is the main torrent in the Valpelline.
Something very different is the Lexert Lake. It is situated in a wood near an inhabited centre. Its quiet shores offer peace and relaxation.
